My original idea was for a fantasy setting but I chose Star Wars purely because it was familiar to a majority of our gaming group, also there is a plethora of background information.
I chose the Dark Times Era, which encompasses the period immediately following the Great Jedi Purge and prior to the formation of the Rebel Alliance. This period suggested itself simply because my son had just completed Star Wars: Force Unleashed and I discovered the d20 source book for Force Unleashed. This period allows a mix of Republic and Imperial equipment, personnel, organisations and characters. This should give players a wide variety of choices.

You probably won't find anything original here, I've been playing or game mastering for over 25 years, so I'd say that over 90% of the rules system could be found in some game somewhere. Some of the games I used for inspiration or outright plagiarised include:

Traveller TNE, Dark Conspiracy, Twilight 2000, (all use the GDW house rules system). I particularly enjoy the character generation process in these games.
Space Opera (FGU) Mostly because it has rules for almost any sci-fi setting, so comparisons can be made with weapons and armour used in different settings. Makes conversion easier, and I liked the Hit locations and some of the other mechanics.
Proteus This game I found in a secondhand bin at GenCon recently, I liked the skill system and the degree of success rules.
Star Wars both WEG's and D20 versions predominantly for setting information in a game format.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page this wiki is truly astounding.

Short description of the system,
Skill based - skill rank+stat +/- modifiers = target to roll under, the lower the roll the better the result.
No classes - players choose occupations for their characters, time spent in an occupation accrues skills, contacts, stat increases, equipment and money.
No experience levels - characters earn experience in those skills they use. To improve a skill you need to practice it or study. If you don't use a skill you won't get better at it.
No hit points - wounds are rated for severity, they cause pain, shock, and blood loss, these will impair a characters ability to function, the more severe the wound the more impaired the character will be, until he/she/it is in so much pain all they can do is roll around screaming in agony, passes out from shock or loss of blood. Someone should probably call for a medic at this stage.

So far:
The Skills List is complete although lacking descriptions.
Player Species Lists have hardly touched on this 4 species have been outlined, hundreds more to go.
Character Generation working through that now, outlining occupations and skills acquired.
Combat needs work.

Samples to follow soon.

Version 0.5 is mostly complete, I expect to add or delete very few skills from this list, I do however expect to add numerous proficiencies and techniques as play testers think of new ways to use a skill.

Currently these are the statistics each character is represented by. I have separated the Species Section, and need to redo the Professions Section as well.

This is the starting list of player Species, I have added in the basic details for most species up to Gran I think. Artwork was downloaded from wookiepedia.

HI there saw this and thought I'd give you some comments

Firstly well done on what youíve produced so far I like it a lot and could see myself using this over the D20 system when it was complete.

After having a quick look through I thought Iíd send you my first impressions:

1)Stats, thereís a lot of them but then it reminds me of legends of the five rings with one main stat and a number of minor stats associated with it. Just keep and eye on the number. Would it be possible to reduce the slave stats down to two at most. I there a possibility of combining some of them?

2)Races: what a wealth of work youíve done here and I get the impression the racial stat roles will be added to all the races you list at a later date. Now as far as these stat roles are concerned. Instead of listing all of them out for each race could you list only the ones that alter. For example the Adarian only has 5 alterations to his stats could they be listed Ö.STA -2, MAS-2, MEM+4, REA+4, APP 2D10. Just thought this would save you one hell of a lot of space.

3)Lastly Öman 98 pages of professions good going. I feel there are a little too many and could put people off. Could they be grouped so say you have a Jedi profession and under that sub classes of jedi showing their entry requirements and their skills. Again like the races the information is all there and looking good, just needs to be rationalized and reduced in some way.

Anyway thatís my first impressions and I like it so far canít wait to see how you put it altogether on a rules mechanic. Bit of advice though try to make a mechanic that will work for 90% of rolls donít go off like so many games do and create a different one for different situations.

Keep at it

I spent a fair bit of time sorting out stats, and ended up with this assortment, two games I found had almost identical stats and descriptions of the stats. "Proteus by Bruce Gomes Industries" and " Gary Gygaxes Dangerous Journeys" †I liked the way they were thought out and adopted them. Having said that we will probably find that some stats may not be used very often during playtesting, and we'll merge them with others.

The racial information is taken from the Starwars D20 and D6 books and Wookiepedia. I'm in the process of setting up a traits system, which includes stat bonuses and penalties, here's the current version, still needs work.

Thought about this at work today, and I think I've got it. I'm going to tie it into the traits section. For instance: instead of having the following professions: Jedi Youngling, Jedi Padawan, Jedi Knight and Jedi Master. We'll have a single profession of Jedi, with the titles and ranks being an earned trait (each of which details any Skills, Proficiencies and/or Techniques common to that Rank/Title.)

The base mechanic is "degree of success" each action has a difficulty that modifies your total skill or stat, roll under the modified target on d20, the difference between the target and your die roll is the degree of success.
This way characters with higher skill levels are more likely to succeed and are more likely to have greater degrees of success, than someone less skilled.

On the job mate. Will finish off the species section first, it will provide a small sample of species for player characters to choose from.

Thanks for the comments.
