Borian of Ulfshaven

Life and times of an Elf in Harn.

In here you will find everything you need to know about Borian.  He was born a Grey Elf, in Ulfshaven, to a Merchnat Father and a Druid Mother.

Borian was brought up in his parents shop, where he decided to follow in his Father's footsteps as a Merchant Adventurer.  However, this is not his true calling.

More to come shortly...................

This is the character background that was given to me after Borian had reached 6th level (this is something Shane, our GM does to stimulate party dynamics and give us all epic quests to complete).

As a party we all have epic quests, they are usually intertwined, some more closely than others, but they all emphasise the need for the party to help each other on these quests at varying times.  They also work very well.

The background:

BORIAN  of  ULFSHAVEN

Borian was born in the year 553 in Ulfshaven, a port city within the Kingdom of Evael. Borian is the second son of his parents; Enowyn & Cylia, Forester Merchants living within the walls of Ulfshaven trading their wares to the busy human Traders that come to the port via ships regularly. Borian’s older brother, Eadyr when younger helped in the family business until Borian came of age then he set off for Lythia as a Sea Trader in the far off city of, “Turgesgal” in Shorkyne.

Located at the mouth of the Enorien River within the Shava forest, Ulfshaven is a major port for Humans and Elves to trade. Borian’s family being Grey Elves have been trading with the outside world for hundreds of years in Ulfshaven. They tend mostly to rare Herbs and ingredients for export to the incoming foreign traders that fetch good prices to humans not so skilled in Herb or Plant Lore. Borian gained much valued experience in this area of knowledge as an adolescent and all related skills in his time within the family business.

Borian being a Grey Elf was much more at ease with outsiders (foreigners) as they are called and came to know many Humans and even a few Dwarves from far away Azedmere. Many merchants frequent the family business but one in particular stood out who was to change Borian’s life…

About three years ago a Dwarven Merchant by the name of, Thyrdin from Azedmere came to Ulfshaven on business with some followers. With him he brought an old scroll that being written in Elvish he could not read but wished to have it deciphered. Borian’s father read the scroll for the Dwarf telling him it was only a recipe for sweet cakes; the disgusted Dwarf grunted some dwarven obscenity crunched up the parchment, threw it down and left. After they had gone, Borian’s father picked up the scroll and carefully re-read the contents. It was indeed a recipe but not for sweet cakes…

It talked of a great Artifact known as, “The Scepter of the Planes”, a device to travel through the planes from one point to another and back… The scroll was the recipe on how to make and enchant it.  Borian had seen an artifact that the Eldar Noldor used to go on, as they said, “Long journeys”. Borian decided that would be his life long goal, to gather the ingredients to enchant such a device for his own use. The thought that Borian entertained was of traveling as a merchant across the planes from one point to another without the need to use a horse, coach or even his feet! With the blessing of his family young Borian set forth on his journey to begin his quest…

Borian’s father had figured out that the scepter, when made, would allow the Caster to instantly travel from any point he was standing to any one of the, “Bind Points” that the maker chooses depending on the ingredients used in the make up of the scepter. There would be no failure rate with the Teleports or any danger of porting into solid matter… The scepter would only be able to be used by the one whose blood is used as an ingredient; anyone else that tried to use it would instantly Teleport into solid matter while the Scepter would teleport itself back to the owner’s Home Bind Point…

A hell of a lot has happened from then until now, this will be added shortly....

A brief catch up.

The party has been on many adventures in the last few years in real time.  Two major campaigns: The Great Necromancer Adventure (which has been written up and posted in these pages); a few side campaigns (mainly to do with each of the parties personal quests) - Thorvald had to go to an island to recieve a message for the next part of his journey, Guthric spent some time in military service as a commander of the guard in Harn, Xavier found a spouse and has managed to produce an heir and Borian decided to change his calling, but more on that in a little while); we also have recently finished our second major campaign, in Lythia searching for Aedon's (the Cleric) brother's remains.  A fairly extensive adventure comprising the party joining a war with the Shorkynese and various others to try a quell a Quarph uprising that had been started by the Agrikan religion and soldiers.  We then travelled high into a mountain range to find the remains we were after - a huge adventure in itself.

Back to Borian himself.  Borian's personal quest involves many different aspects.  He is trying to find all of the ingredients to make a "Sceptre of the Planes".  An ancient artefact that will enable Borian, and no-one else, to travel anywhere in the world instantly.  Incredibly powerful piece of hardware once the ingredients are found and the sceptre assembled.  However, the ingredients are not exactly easy to come by.

For example, the handle is made from male and female entwood, the main focus of power is a 100 carat diamond (already enchanted) said to be deep in the lost Dwarven city of Kiraz, the setting for the stone is made from the teeth of a summoned imp, a sample of water from each of the bind points (places Borian has travelled that when the name is spoken, that is where he is transported to), a pint of his own blood, a pint of dragon blood that has been willingly given and finally to bind all this together, leather that has been made from the skin of a Gythyanki.  As you could probably guess each ingredient in itself is an adventure to get.  Borian has to do the lot, survive, and then make it.

Having said that, he has thrown himself head first into achieving this.  But, as the son of a merchant (to which he thought was his calling) the ingredients became harder to attain than just trying to buy them from around the world.

In deep meditation one night Borian decided to change his path and decided that he must follow the path of a Druid.  This would help him in his ultimate quest, not only in finding the Entwood so badly needed, but to also learn all of the spells of a druid thus enabling him to turn to magi and also learn the spells of Ancient Lore.  He also felt that to gain a pint of blood willingly from a dragon would need certain oratory skills and thus decided to learn the languages of the world - this would in turn enable him to learn the ancient languages and consequently Dragon Speech.

So Borian trecked back to his home and spent two years of intense meditation, ritual and learning so as to become a Druid and learn the languages needed to fulfill his quest.

As of now, Borian has learnt the languages he needs, has learnt up to 8th level spells, has learnt the ancient lore spels of Earth, Water and Air.  He continues to learn more spells and continue on his journey with the party, helping them fulfill their own needs and quest while all the time gaing the experience and resoplve needed for his own quest.

The journey continues...............
